This is like Paranormal Activity meets the “Gakko no Kaidan” series from the ’90s. I agree, I think this film has potential, but the part about the ghost of a girl who committed suicide at the school, ghosts in the bathroom, etc., are very common in J-horror, so maybe the only novel thing about it would be the filming style.

Great post! I’m a subtitler myself (English and German into Dutch), and even though foreign broadcasts in the Netherlands are always subtitled, I often hear this complaint as well. Recently I heard how they solve this in cinemas in Poland. The original film is played, and a translator, who’s in the audience, reads the translated dialogue aloud, which means all characters are read in the same voice!

Subtitles may suck, but they’re often the best choice to reach a wider audience. If only the movie industry would recognize that and pay the subtitler a decent fee. It’s a form of art, people. It really is.

I’m a subtitler and proud of it!

This movie looks awesome! Funny, quirky, heartwarming. And judging from the trailer it doesn’t look corny like most Japanese “heartwarming” films these days.

Also, the casting looks promising. I always pictured Oguri Shun as just another young “idol” type (especially after seeing him in the TV series Hanayori-Dango), but this movie gives me some hope that maybe he’s following the footsteps of the serious and renowned actor Yakusho Koji.
