If you’re looking for a cheap, but authentic and incredibly delicious Japanese curry in New York City, look no further than Go!Go!Curry! located on 38th St. and 8th Ave.
Go!Go!Curry! is a popular curry chain in Japan with over 30 shops. They opened up their midtown location in 2007 and has been going strong ever since.
Cheap eat, in the dessert of good deals that is Midtown Manhattan
For just $5 and no tip (since it’s self-service), you get a “Single” or regular-sized curry. Add a thick slice of chicken or pork cutlet and it’s still only $7. If you’re especially hungry, you can up the size of the curry or add more toppings like sausage, cheese, and boiled egg each for $1-2 more.
Go!Go!Curry! also gives away a free topping on the 5th, 15th, and 25th of each month (because “go” in Japanese is “five”). And if you’re lucky, you can get a free topping because you showed up to the restaurant the day after Hideki Matsui, the CEO’s favorite baseball player, hit a home run.
If you’re with a group of three or four, consider the “Grand Slam,” a mammoth of a curry weighing over 5lbs! The Grand Slam is a mound of rice doused in curry, topped with fried chicken, fried pork, sausages, eggs, and thinly sliced cabbage – all this for a measly $12.50.
The cheap price lends itself to all kinds of occasions. Whether you’re looking for a filling lunch to get you through the day or a late-night alternative to expensive Asian junk food like Bonchon.
The curry is filling and delicious
Simply put: Go!Go!’s curry is indistinguishable from a typical curry found in a curry shop in Shinjuku.
If you’ve ever had curry while on a trip in Japan, your fond memories will relive themselves and your terrible curry addiction habits will relapse.
If you’ve never had Japanese curry before, look forward to the experience. Japanese curry is more mild than the spicy Indian curry. The consistency is somewhat thicker, like a stew, reflecting the British, not Indian, origins of Japanese curry.
Look for the out-of-place gorilla in the garment district
Go!Go!Curry! is located on the northeast corner of the intersection at 38th St. and 8th Ave. Just look for the bright yellow sign with a gorilla on it. With a fast food shop-like interior decor, it’s an easily approachable restaurant whether you’re alone or with a group. Food can be eaten in or to go. Don’t forget cash!
Finally, if you find this writer binging on curry there, just… leave me be. It’s probably safer that way.
